Solo? You’re not Alone.

More adults than ever are aging independently—without a partner or present children to rely on. Yet this rapidly growing group, known as Solo Agers, remains one of the most under-recognized communities today.

With unique considerations for the future, including care, housing, and financial security, Solo Agers face a distinct set of challenges. To confront The Six Hazards of Aging Solo, Certified Financial Planner®, Allen Davis, and Solo Aging expert, Mary Young, have joined their expertise to reflect on these hazards, laying financial planning as the foundation on which Solos can navigate the multitude of choices and scale the mountain of unknowns.

This book is meant to help Solos build stability, confidence, and clarity. It positions financial planning as a framework for navigating solo aging with purpose and peace of mind.

Financial planning is more than managing money—it’s the framework that empowers every other decision with clarity and confidence. This reflection highlights how a solid financial foundation can help enhance your options and solidify your independence. When your resources and contingencies are thoughtfully aligned, you can navigate the uncertainties of aging with focus rather than fear.

Grounded in decades of professional insight, Financial Planning for Solo Agers helps readers navigate life’s later chapters not by eliminating risk, but by transforming uncertainty into informed perspective. It’s about seeing past the “Mountain of Unknowns” clearly and realizing that with the proper footing and financial planning, you can climb it on your own. With context and structure, what once felt like isolation becomes autonomy, and the future becomes something to design, not defend against.

Are You a Solo?

  • Age 50 or older?
  • Currently single (widowed, divorced, separated, never married, or don’t have a life partner)?
  • Don’t have adult children who could provide help as you age, when needed?

The Soloist: Where the Conversation Began

This newsletter is how it all began. What started as a simple series of updates—initially meant to be compiled into a small pamphlet—grew into something much larger. As we shared insights, stories, and resources for those navigating life independently, it became clear that Solo Aging wasn’t a niche topic—it was an urgent need. From that realization, Financial Planning for Solo Agers was born.

The Soloist newsletter continues that conversation. Each issue shares practical guidance, expert insight, and real stories to help Solos live well, care for themselves intentionally, and make confident choices about the future. Because without a plan, others will have to make decisions for you—often without knowing your wishes.
